FSSAI Registration and Licence: Which One Do You Need?

Anyone making, storing, selling or distributing food in India needs an FSSAI registration or licence. Which one depends on the size and type of the business.

Three levels

  • Basic registration: for small food businesses, generally those with turnover up to ₹12 lakh.
  • State licence: for medium businesses, generally up to around ₹20 crore turnover.
  • Central licence: for larger operations, importers, and certain categories such as e-commerce food operators.
  • The exact eligibility depends on your activity, so we confirm it before applying.

Documents typically needed

  • Photo ID and address proof of the applicant.
  • Proof of the business premises.
  • A list of food products or activities.
  • Business registration documents for companies and firms.
  • For licences, additional documents such as a food safety plan and layout details.

The process

Applications are filed on the government's food safety portal. After scrutiny, and an inspection where required, the registration or licence is issued. It typically takes 7–30 days, depending on the licence type.

Keeping it valid

Registrations and licences are valid for a fixed period and must be renewed on time. Annual returns apply to certain licence holders. We track the dates for you.
