If you run a shop, office, restaurant or any commercial place with employees, your state usually requires a Shop and Establishment registration. It is also asked for by banks and landlords.

Who needs it

Shops, offices, restaurants, clinics, showrooms, salons, agencies, startups with an office, warehouses, and any other commercial establishment. Each state has its own Act, and the rules for small establishments and those with employees differ.

What it gives you

  • Legal proof that your business operates from that address
  • A document banks ask for when you open a current account or apply for a loan
  • Compliance with working hours, leave and wages rules for your staff
  • A base for other licences, such as GST and FSSAI in some states

Documents needed

  • PAN and Aadhaar of the owner, partners or directors
  • Proof of the business address: rent agreement or ownership papers, and a recent utility bill
  • Landlord’s no-objection letter, if rented
  • Passport photographs
  • List of employees, if any
  • Incorporation certificate or partnership deed, for companies, LLPs and firms

Our process

  1. 1You tell us the business type, address and number of employees.
  2. 2We check your state’s rules and the fee.
  3. 3We prepare the application and upload your documents.
  4. 4We pay the fee and follow it up until your certificate is issued.
  5. 5You receive the certificate, and we note the renewal date for you.
Fees, timelines and renewal rules differ by state. We confirm them for your state before you pay.

After registration

Display the certificate at your place of business. Keep your employee records and leave registers up to date, and renew or intimate changes within the time the state sets.

Common questions

Is the registration done by the state or the centre?

By the state labour department or the municipal body, under your state’s Shops and Establishments Act.

How soon after opening should I apply?

Most states ask you to register within a set time after you start, often about 30 days. We confirm the time for your state.

Do I need it if I work from home?

It depends on your state and your activity. Many home-based service businesses do not, but banks sometimes ask for it. We check your case.

Do I need to renew it?

In many states yes, every one to five years, or you can pay for a longer period at once. We keep the date for you.
