GST registration gives your business a GSTIN, lets you charge GST on invoices and claim input tax credit.
Who must register
- Businesses whose turnover crosses the threshold (generally ₹40 lakh for goods and ₹20 lakh for services, and lower in some states).
- Businesses making inter-state supplies of goods.
- Most e-commerce sellers selling through marketplaces.
- Certain categories such as casual taxable persons or those liable under reverse charge.
- Anyone who chooses to register voluntarily, for example to claim input tax credit.
Documents typically needed
- PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor, partners or directors, plus photographs.
- Business registration documents (such as the Certificate of Incorporation or partnership deed).
- Address proof of the place of business and a rent agreement or ownership proof.
- Bank account proof, such as a cancelled cheque or statement.
The process
- Prepare the application and documents.
- File the application on the GST portal and complete Aadhaar authentication.
- Respond to any query or verification by the officer.
- Receive the GST registration certificate with the GSTIN.
GST registration typically takes 3–7 working days, depending on verification.
After registration
Registered businesses must file regular returns even in months with no business. See our guide to GST return filing.
Common questions
Can I register for GST voluntarily?
